IRIS Movie of the Day
At least once a week a movie of the Sun taken by NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) is posted by one of the scientists operating the instrument.
X-Class Flare at the Limb

February 2024 was a very active months in terms of large flares. One of the regions driving this activity was AR13576, which produced multiple high level flares. The largest one occurred when the region was almost at the solar limb where it produced an X2.5 flare. Initial ribbons can be seen to develop before an explosion of bright material that is scanned directly under IRIS's slit.
