IRIS Movie of the Day
At least once a week a movie of the Sun taken by NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) is posted by one of the scientists operating the instrument.
Two merging sunspots and s-shaped flares

In AR12880, the two leading sunspots are merging. As this occurs the plasma is heated and brightenings are generated in the middle of the merging in a s-shaped structure.
