Watching for Flares
Credit: IRIS, LMSAL/NASA, Jake Parker
Sometimes the best way to catch a flare with IRIS is to sit and wait. On July 23rd 2016 two active regions, AR12567 and AR12565, were traveling across the sun one after another. These regions of strong complicated magnetic field often produce eruptions and in this case IRIS watched just long enough to catch an M class flare.
