Mercury above the chromosphere and corona

Mercury is seen here in a variety of wavelengths observed with IRIS and SDO/AIA. The golden background image shows the hot, million-degree corona observed in the extreme ultra-violet light by SDO/AIA. Mercury is the small dark feature crossing from left to right. The inset shows a zoom-in of Mercury using ultraviolet filters from IRIS and SDO that show the chromosphere (10,000 K) and transition region (100,000 K).
